Kirkland, WA., -- Canoe
and Kayak magazine, the nation's top-selling paddlesports publication, has
plans to get 2,000 new paddlers into boats this April. They are encouraging
experienced paddlers to take their friends out for a day on the water and then
log onto a new website to share the details. The incentive: up to one in 10 may
win a brand new PFD from one of Canoe and
Kayak magazine's partners in the "Take a Friend paddling" program.
Experienced paddlers log onto Startpaddling.com, to record
the details of their on-water experience and post a photograph. Up for grabs
are one of 200 new PFDs pledged by Stohlquist, NRS, MTI, Stearns, Kokatat,
Harmony and Extrasport. Every 4th
"friend" wins one. MTI's
Lili Colby mentioned, "I think it is a great idea - about time someone
brought everyone together to do something!"
Canoe and Kayak
magazine is using the contest as a debut event for Startpaddling.com, an on-line resource for people interested in
entering the world of paddling. The site will contain technique articles,
videos and links to resources to get started in paddling. "It's a place people
can get information about our sport without feeling nervous about being a
beginner," says Canoe and Kayak
editor Frederick Reimers. "It will be a safe and welcoming site, and one chock
full of information gleaned from 35 years of paddling material we've
accumulated at Canoe and Kayak."
Meanwhile, The Canoe
& Kayak Beginner's Guide will be published for it's 22nd
year. It sold an outstanding 22,000
copies off the newsstand in 2007.
"Increases in sales of the
Beginner's Guide have made it clear to us that there is a huge need for
this specific type of paddling information" said Associate Publisher Jim
Marsh, "and we think the industry will support it." The 2008 issue closes for advertising on
February 28.
